LTE 4PMR: secure 4G

Law enforcement, security and emergency services use specific technologies (tetra/tetrapol) on secure frequencies for their communications. However, these frequencies remain limited, and are not suitable for transmitting high-speed, multimedia data. The LTE4PMR project brings together Airbus Group, Nokia, Sequans, Télécom SudParis and Télécom ParisTech to provide these services with a high-speed, secure communications technology tailored to their needs.

LTE, Long Term Evolution, refers to the latest-generation 4G technology, and PMR, Professional Mobile Radio, to the system of mobile radios for professionals. The LTE4PMR project aims to upgrade PMR services to LTE technology, using secure frequency bands.

Activities linked to this project, within the two ITM schools, are coordinated by Badii Jouaber, lecturer in the RS2M department at Télécom SudParis. They mainly concern technological optimizations applicable to PPM services on LTE, as well as improving coverage and resilience on these networks.

There are many challenges involved in implementing this technology: defining new, optimized techniques for transmitting and broadcasting multimedia streams for mobile user groups, taking into account coverage, transmission quality and user group organization. Ensure infrastructure resilience in extreme situations where network coverage may be damaged (e.g. by fire or flood).

Experiments and demonstrations on LTE research platforms are planned at each school.
